Gaza Speaks encompasses a selection of first-hand testimonies by civilians in Gaza, that I translated into English. These testimonies reveal the harrowing experience of civilians after Israel declared war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip in retaliation to a land, sea, and air assault on 7 October 2023. According to Israel, the assault by Hamas led to over 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 240 hostages. Gaza’s Health Ministry figures indicate that Israel’s war in Gaza has resulted in more than 24,000 deaths. About 70% of those killed are reported to be women and children. Another 57,296 Palestinians have been reportedly injured. The war has also displaced 1.9mn of the enclave’s 2.3mn inhabitants, and rendered much of the territory uninhabitable.

With an intent to offer English-speaking audiences access to civilian testimonies in unavailable in their language, Gaza Speaks offers word-for-word translation of first-hand accounts from civilians in Gaza. By translating these accounts from the Palestinian Arabic dialect into English this book provides a unique insight into the lived experiences of ordinary Palestinians whose accounts until the time of this book's production were not translated into English.
